About Me

I am Lawrence Weber, a general lover of digital things, Head of Digital at Karmarama, FWA judge and writer, contributor to brand-e and a member of the IPA Digital Business Group.

If you really need to, then you can take a look at my LinkedIn profile or FWA interview for all the detail, but stay here for interesting stuff I find and some stuff of my own.

BTW- I live on an island called West Mersea, hence the oh so clever name of this blog.

The guys at FWA and brand-e are kind enough to let me contribute content, here are links to some FWA things

SXSW Day 2- Wearable Tech, Talking Shoes and Future of TV

I've got the pleasure of attending SXSW this year, finally justifying the name of my blog.

There are so many blog posts about SXSW that this is genuinely here as a record for me. I hope someone else reads it though.

Day 2 started with us sitting on the floor on the convention centre watching someone on a small screen, talk about Twitter and tTV.

A bit of a let down as the main insight was people Tweet about the programmes they like. Who knew.

A quick race to the Raddison though, brought a massive reward.

Jennifer Darmour from Artefact- a product design and fashion company- talked about wearable Tech. Amazing.

Key things to take away from the best thing I've seen so far

  • We're about to move into the era of the wearable interface, where it interacts with us rather than the other way around
  • We're in "The Brick Phone"  phase of tech. It's ugly black plastic that bolts on uncomfortably. We need clothing that contains tech in a discreet but aesthetic way
  • Data is a real issue, we'll collect a lot of personal body data  so we need to derive some meaning from it and it's hugely personal
  • We're essentially looking at the wearable tech sitting between our body data and the rest of the APIs that define the web. Imagine your heart beat influencing music played on Spotify via a heart monitor shirt

Have a look at what The Artefact Group do here

RGA had some interesting things to say about Tech in the creative and brainstorming processes. You can see the deck here

Ribs for lunch then Google playground- which having seen the Wearable Tech presentation was a little bit of a let down, even with The Talking Shoes that were a bit meh. Techcrunch liked them though

Then finally onto a session on the future of TV from Protein and Vimeo at Hackney House.

Exhausting but pretty amazing.

Bring on Day Three
